The Electoral Commission has started the general update of the National Voters Register today, Monday, to prepare for the 2025-2026 General Elections. This exercise will run from January 20 to February 10, 2025, at designated update stations across Uganda’s 10,717 parishes/wards. Stations will operate daily, including weekends, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
According to Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, the update aims to allow eligible Ugandans aged 18 and above who are not yet registered voters to register. Additionally, registered voters who wish to transfer to new polling stations can apply during this period.
Mucunguzi emphasized the importance of the exercise, noting that a credible National Voters Register is essential for voting, candidacy, candidate representation, or filing election petitions. He urged all eligible citizens to ensure they are registered to exercise their voting rights under Article 59 of the Constitution.
After February 10, 2025, no further applications for voter registration or polling station transfers will be accepted. - Mucunguzi reiterated
Registered voters do not need to re-register but should confirm the accuracy of their details in the Voters Register. The update also allows students who were registered with the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) and have turned 18 to provide their National Identification Number (NIN) to register and be assigned polling stations within their parishes.
Mucunguzi outlined the key activities of the exercise: registration of new voters, verification and correction of voter details, transfer applications for voters wishing to change polling locations, and registration of eligible students who have recently reached voting age.
He reminded the public that February 10, 2025, is the deadline for voter registration. Individuals who fail to register by this date will not be eligible to participate in the general elections. He encouraged all eligible citizens to take advantage of this opportunity.
The exercise will also involve updating Voters’ Registers for Special Interest Groups (SIGs), including youth, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and older persons, to facilitate their council and committee elections.
Mucunguzi reiterated that after February 10, 2025, no further applications for voter registration or polling station transfers will be accepted.
