Authorities have confirmed the identity of the woman who was tragically murdered on Sunday morning while jogging along the Northern Bypass. The victim has been identified as Agnes Nantongo, the Manager at African Oil Petrol Station, as stated by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango during an interview with Kampala Media TV on Sunday evening.
Onyango reported that the incident, which has alarmed local joggers, took place in Kamuli A’ Zone, Kireka, near the Northern Bypass. Nantongo was last seen leaving her workplace on Saturday around 7:00 PM, dressed in the same attire that was discovered on her body this morning.
“At approximately 8:00 AM today, passersby notified the authorities about a deceased woman found in the bushes by the roadside,” Onyango explained, noting that the police acted swiftly to commence an investigation. He emphasized that inquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding Agnes Nantongo’s death.
This incident is not isolated, as similar occurrences have been reported in the past. In July 2022, James Kakooza, a 54-year-old local Councillor from Kamwokya, was murdered by unidentified assailants while jogging near Centenary Park. At that time, Kampala Metropolitan deputy Police spokesman Luke Owoyesigire indicated that Kakooza was attacked by two men on a motorcycle who struck him with a blunt object before fleeing the scene.
Earlier this year, Bishop Zac Niringiye, a former Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala, was assaulted by unknown assailants in Ntinda while on his morning jog. He was struck on the back of the head by a man on a motorcycle, causing him to fall to the ground, but he fortunately survived the attack.
The Uganda Police Force has urged anyone with information related to Nantongo’s murder to reach out to the Kireka police station or the nearest police facility.
