Uganda has postponed this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations, President Yoweri Museveni has announced in a statement addressed to Ugandans, especially the “Bazzukulu.”

According to the President, the decision was reached after consultations with the national epidemic response task force and religious leaders.

“After consultations with the national epidemic response task force and religious leaders, we have decided to postpone the Martyrs’ Day to a later date, which will be communicated,” the statement read.

The President urged pilgrims who had already started traveling to return home and continue observing all precautionary measures.

He also encouraged the public to remain vigilant by reporting anyone who is sick and urging those who feel unwell to seek medical care immediately.

“We regret any inconvenience caused, but the protection of life must come first,” President Museveni stated.

Martyrs’ Day is one of Uganda’s largest annual religious events, drawing thousands of pilgrims from across East Africa and beyond to the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine every year.

Government authorities are expected to communicate new dates for the celebrations in the coming days.
