The Catholic Church has a new pope! After a conclave of 133 cardinal electors, US Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the new leader, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. He's the first American pontiff and the 267th Catholic pope, succeeding Pope Francis who passed away on April 21 after a 12-year reign.

Key Facts About Pope Leo XIV:

- Age: 69 years old
- Origin: Originally from Chicago, Illinois
- Career: Spent most of his career as a missionary in Peru and became a cardinal in 2023
- Background: Known for giving few media interviews and rarely speaking in public

The Election Process:

The cardinals held a secret ballot in the Sistine Chapel, with white smoke signaling the successful election of a new pope. The election came on the first full day of voting, with the cardinals secluding themselves behind the Vatican's medieval walls.

Reaction:

Tens of thousands of people gathered in St. Peter's Square cheered and applauded as the white smoke emerged, with some holding signs that read "We have a pope!" and “Long Live the Pope!”

Pope Leo XIV's Challenges:

As the new leader of the 1.4 billion-member Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV will face the challenge of deciding whether to continue Pope Francis' vision of greater openness and reform or adopt a more conservative approach.
