The Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, through State Minister for Higher Education, Hon. Dr. John C. Muyingo, has assured Arts teachers of government support in their quest for better pay. This assurance led to the suspension of their industrial action after a meeting with teachers across the country.

Background of the Strike

The Arts teachers had embarked on a strike to highlight pay disparities between them and their Science counterparts. Leader of Opposition, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, raised concerns over the strike's impact on teaching and grading students during a plenary session. He urged the government to address the pay disparities rather than intimidating the teachers.

Government's Commitment

Dr. Muyingo assured that the government is committed to raising salaries of public servants, including teachers, in a phased manner. He called upon Arts teachers to return to work, emphasizing that their salary increment issue is being seriously handled by the government.

Importance of Teacher Welfare

The government's commitment to improving teacher welfare aligns with its broader goal of enhancing education quality in Uganda. As emphasized by President Museveni, improving teacher welfare is crucial for delivering quality education. The Ministry of Education and Sports, under the leadership of Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, is working to professionalize the teaching profession through the National Teacher Policy.

Next Steps

With the strike called off, Arts teachers are expected to resume work while the government works on implementing the agreed-upon salary increments. The phased approach to salary increments will likely involve
- *Salary Review. A comprehensive review of the current salary structure for teachers.
- *Budget Allocation.Allocating sufficient funds in the budget to support teacher salary increments.
- *Implementation Timeline

Establishing a clear timeline for implementing the salary increments.

By addressing the pay disparities and improving teacher welfare, the government aims to enhance the quality of education in Uganda.
