David Lewis Rubongoya, Secretary General of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has sharply criticized the Ugandan government’s proposal to introduce a law compelling young people to respect and follow the advice of older persons.

According to post on X, Rubongoya described the move as "madness," asserting that respect is something earned, not enforced through legislation.

The proposal, spearheaded by State Minister for Older Persons Dominic Mafabi Gidudu, seeks to restore traditional values and reinforce respect for elders

The government believes that the rising influence of modernity and western culture has led to a breakdown in the intergenerational respect that once defined Ugandan society.

Minister Gidudu explained that the law aims to address thPe "limited intergenerational dividends," which he claims have resulted in the younger generation disregarding the wisdom and guidance of their elders. According to him, this growing divide is a matter of national concern that needs to be corrected by law.

Rubongoya, however, was quick to dismiss the proposal, stating, “And the madness in this our country continues!!! Respect is earned, not demanded.”
