ENTEBBE, UGANDA – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni today hosted Mr. Gilbert Weill, one of the survivors of the 1976 Entebbe hijacking, together with his family and friends at State House Entebbe, as they returned to Uganda nearly five decades after the tragic incident.

During the meeting, President Museveni reflected on the events surrounding the hijacking and the subsequent rescue operation, noting that while the incident was a tragedy, it also marked a significant turning point in Uganda’s history.

The President observed that the rescue mission contributed to the eventual collapse of the Idi Amin regime and paved the way for the country’s journey toward peace, stability and development.

President Museveni shared Uganda’s transformation from the difficult circumstances of the 1970s to the progress the country enjoys today, highlighting achievements in security, economic growth and regional stability.

He further emphasized the importance of strengthening economic cooperation between Uganda, Israel and Europe, particularly in the areas of value addition, agro-industrialisation and investment. The President noted that deeper partnerships in these sectors would create jobs, expand trade and support sustainable economic development.

Mr. Weill and his delegation expressed appreciation for the warm reception and the opportunity to witness Uganda’s progress since the events of 1976.

The meeting underscored the importance of historical reflection, reconciliation and building stronger international partnerships for shared prosperity.
