The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, on Wednesday afternoon stepped out of the House after plenary to engage directly with boda boda riders operating under the IPS Boda Boda Stage SACCO.

She was accompanied by the State Minister for Finance (General Duties), Hon. Henry Musasizi. The engagement marked a gesture of solidarity with the city’s boda boda community, who play a crucial role in Kampala’s transport system.

During the interaction, Speaker Among delivered a financial token of UGX 10 million from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to support the SACCO’s development activities. The contribution, she said, demonstrates the President’s continued commitment to improving the welfare of ordinary Ugandans, especially youth and informal sector workers who form the backbone of Uganda’s economy.

“The President recognizes your efforts and challenges. This support is meant to strengthen your SACCO and enable you to grow together. I urge you to use these funds transparently, in unity, and for the benefit of all members,” Speaker Among said.

She also cautioned riders on road safety, noting that boda bodas account for a significant proportion of road accidents in Kampala. She urged them to be ambassadors of discipline on the road, wear helmets, observe traffic regulations, and put passengers’ safety first.

Minister Musasizi, in his remarks, emphasized government’s prioritization of financial inclusion through SACCOs and parish-based models. He encouraged boda boda riders to take advantage of government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM) to access affordable credit and grow their businesses.

The boda boda riders warmly welcomed the Speaker and applauded both the President and Parliament leadership for recognizing their struggles and extending direct support.

The IPS Boda Boda Stage SACCO leaders pledged to put the UGX 10 million to good use, expand their income-generating projects, and ensure transparency and accountability in its management.

This intervention is part of ongoing efforts by government and leaders to strengthen SACCOs as vehicles for economic empowerment, especially in the informal sector where unemployment and underemployment remain high.
