The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Ben Kumumanya, has called on town clerks to enhance infrastructure and provide essential amenities in markets to attract more vendors and increase revenue collection.

Kumumanya made this call during a meeting with town clerks from urban authorities overseeing the management of Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Program (MATIP) markets at the Ministry Headquarters.

Improving Market Infrastructure
Kumumanya emphasized the need for town clerks to improve market infrastructure, including the provision of water and electricity. He noted that this would not only attract more vendors but also boost revenue collection from the markets. The Permanent Secretary encouraged town clerks to enforce the implementation of the provisions of the Markets Act, particularly the clause that eliminated landlords in government-owned markets.

 Success Stories
Kumumanya applauded Gulu and Arua Cities for their success in restoring trade orders and boosting market revenue collection, respectively. Arua City was singled out for its impressive performance in revenue collection, which the town clerk, David Kyasanku, attributed to improved amenities in Arua Central Market. These amenities include water, electricity, and the purchase of garbage trucks that remove garbage daily.
