The Nakivubo Channel, a vital drainage system in Kampala's central business district, is undergoing a significant transformation. Businessman Dr. Hamis Kiggundu has partnered with the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to revamp the channel, with guidance from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and African Nations Championship (CHAN) inspection teams.

The Problem
For decades, the Nakivubo Channel has been plagued by flooding, pollution, and safety hazards, affecting the city's residents, businesses, and infrastructure. The channel's poor condition has made it a breeding ground for waterborne diseases and a significant environmental concern.

The Solution
The redevelopment project aims to create a modern, eco-friendly corridor that will:
Mitigate Flooding
Underground flood-control chambers will reduce the risk of flooding, protecting the city from damage and disruption.

Improve Sanitation
Solid waste filtration systems will enhance water quality, reducing pollution and health risks.
Enhance Public Spaces
Pedestrian walkways and green public spaces will transform the area into a beautiful and functional hub, supporting business and tourism.

Key Features of the Redeveloped Channel
- Underground Flood-Control Chambers
Designed to prevent flooding and ensure the city's safety.

- Solid Waste Filtration Systems

A Model for Urban Development
This project showcases Uganda's ability to drive local development initiatives, setting a precedent for future urban projects in the region. The redevelopment of Nakivubo Channel is a significant step towards creating a sustainable and modern urban landscape in Kampala, ahead of the city's hosting of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Dr. Kiggundu emphasized that the project represents national pride and community development, providing a clean, safe, and modern urban drainage system for Kampala's residents. The KCCA has committed to providing technical oversight, ensuring the project meets international standards and aligns with the city's broader drainage master plan.
