LEGS Project Brings Clean Water to 2,662 Households in Ntoroko District
More than 5,000 residents of Ntoroko District can now access clean and safe water, thanks to the newly commissioned Nyakatoke Gravity Flow Water System, a Shs. 1.2 billion project under the Local Government Enhancement Service Delivery (LEGS) initiative. The project, officially launched by the State Minister for Local Government, Hon. Victoria Rusoke Businge, in Nombe Sub-county, will directly benefit 2,662 households across the sub-counties of Nombe and Karugutu. The scheme covers over 30 kilometers, bringing relief to a community that has long endured water scarcity. Minister Calls for Ownership and Patriotism During the commissioning, Minister Rusoke urged residents to guard the water facility against vandalism, describing such acts as unpatriotic and destructive to community progress. She emphasized that the sustainability of the system will depend largely on community ownership and responsibility. “This project belongs to you, and its survival depends on how much you value and protect it. When we destroy what government has put in place, we destroy our own future,” she said. Community Welcomes Relief from Water Burden Mr. Karim Kule, the Chairperson of the Water Board, expressed gratitude on behalf of the community, pledging total ownership of the facility. He noted that the new system has freed residents from the burden of buying water at Shs. 1,000 per jerrycan during the dry season and the health risks of sharing stagnant water with animals.“We are greatly relieved. This facility will save lives, improve health, and ease the financial burden on our households,” Mr. Kule remarked. Stakeholders in Attendance The event was graced by a wide range of leaders and stakeholders, including the Ministry’s technical team led by Commissioner Koma Stephen, who represented the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Ben Kumumanya; the LEGS project team led by Madam Maria Nakitende, representing Project Coordinator Eng. Paul Mukasa Kasule; the area Member of Parliament; district political and technical leaders; and hundreds of excited residents. Transforming Lives in Rural Uganda The Nyakatoke Gravity Flow Water System marks a major milestone in improving service delivery in rural Uganda, reducing waterborne diseases, easing household expenses, and empowering communities through access to clean water.
