Anita Annet Among has officially announced that she will not contest for the Speakership of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, ending weeks of speculation surrounding the highly anticipated race within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

In a strongly worded public statement released on Monday, Among said her decision followed “wide consultations and deep introspection” aimed at preserving “harmony and clarity” within the party.

“I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership race of the 12th Parliament,” Among declared.

The outgoing Speaker expressed gratitude to Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the NRM leadership, and members of the 11th Parliament for entrusting her with leadership responsibilities as both Deputy Speaker and Speaker over the last five years.

Among also thanked her family, friends, and political supporters for standing by her throughout her tenure.

Her announcement comes amid growing political tension and internal consultations within the NRM over the leadership of the next Parliament. By stepping aside, Among pledged loyalty to the candidate who will eventually be endorsed by President Museveni and the party leadership.

“I pledge my total support to the candidates who will be endorsed by the President and the Party,” she said, urging all NRM MPs entering the 12th Parliament to rally behind the official party position.

The Speaker further stated that she remains available for national service “as the party and the President may assign.”

In a notable section of her statement, Among addressed the ongoing investigations linked to allegations that have recently emerged against her, pledging full cooperation with state authorities.

“I pledge to continue cooperating with all ongoing investigations as initiated by the relevant organs of the state to get to the root of all the allegations raised,” she added.

The development is expected to significantly reshape the internal dynamics of the NRM ahead of the formation of the 12th Parliament and the election of its top leadership positions.

Political analysts say the withdrawal could pave the way for a consensus candidate backed by the ruling party leadership, potentially minimizing divisions within the NRM caucus.

Among concluded her statement with the nationalistic phrase:

“For God and My Country.”

The NRM leadership is yet to officially announce its preferred candidate for the Speakership race.
