Thomas Tayebwa has received a major political boost after Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly confirmed that PLU-leaning Members of Parliament will support him in the race for Deputy Speaker.

The announcement, made through Gen. Muhoozi’s official X account, has sparked widespread political discussion and positioned Tayebwa among the strongest figures in the contest for the influential parliamentary office.

In his statement, Gen. Muhoozi revealed that the decision followed guidance from the Commander-in-Chief,

signaling what many observers see as a coordinated political position among legislators associated with the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).

“On the issue of Deputy Speaker, after getting guidance from the Commander-in-Chief, all PLU leaning MPs will support Rt. Honourable Thomas Tayebwa for that position. Congratulations Rt. Honourable,” Gen. Muhoozi posted.

The endorsement is being interpreted by political analysts as a major comeback for Tayebwa, whose future in the Deputy Speakership race had recently become a topic of speculation within political circles.

Tayebwa’s supporters quickly welcomed the statement online, describing it as a strong vote of confidence in his leadership, experience, and performance in Parliament. Many argued that his ability to manage parliamentary debates and maintain working relations across the political divide has strengthened his standing among legislators.

The latest declaration from Gen. Muhoozi is expected to further consolidate Tayebwa’s support base as discussions surrounding parliamentary leadership continue to intensify.

The Patriotic League of Uganda has increasingly become influential in Uganda’s political conversations through mobilization campaigns, public events, and strong online engagement. While PLU is not a political party with official Members of Parliament, several legislators are considered sympathetic or closely aligned to the movement.

Political commentators say public endorsements from influential figures such as Gen. Muhoozi could play a significant role in shaping opinions within Parliament and among ruling party supporters.

Following the statement, social media platforms were flooded with congratulatory messages from supporters who described Tayebwa’s return to the center of the Deputy Speakership debate as a significant political comeback.

The development now places renewed focus on Tayebwa’s political future as momentum around the Deputy Speakership race continues to build.
