State Minister for Higher Education, Hon. Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, has paid glowing tribute to the late Rev. Fr. Simon Peter Ssessanga, describing him as a transformative priest whose life’s work uplifted communities and strengthened the mission of the Church.

Speaking during the burial ceremony at St. Kizito Catholic Parish, Katikamu, in Luweero District, Dr. Muyingo praised Fr. Ssessanga for his 46 years of exceptional priestly service, noting that the late cleric’s leadership touched countless lives in Bamunanika, Mulajje, and beyond.

Dr. Muyingo emphasized that Fr. Ssessanga served without discrimination, working for the wellbeing of all people regardless of tribe, religion, or political leaning. He said this spirit of inclusiveness is what Uganda needs, especially during periods of heightened political activity.
“He was a priest who never turned away anyone. His mission was humanity, and he lived it every day,” Dr. Muyingo remarked, urging the public to emulate the late priest’s humility, cooperation, and dedication to community development.

The ceremony also featured a message from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, delivered by Brig. Gen. Jacob Asiimwe. The President saluted Fr. Ssessanga for his courage during the unrest of 1982, when he protected religious Sisters at Kijaguzo Parish and later helped the President’s mother, the late Esteri Kokundeka, escape danger by secretly transporting her to Kenya. Shedrack Nzeire Kaguta, speaking for the Kaguta family, echoed this gratitude and called for unity among Ugandans.

Led by Bishop Lawrence Mukasa of Kasana-Luweero Diocese, the clergy paid their respects to a man they described as steadfast, compassionate, and committed to the Church’s mission. Priests, Sisters, political leaders, Members of Parliament, and hundreds of mourners attended to honor a priest whose influence extended far beyond the pulpit.
Fr. Ssessanga, who passed away at age 72 after an illness, was laid to rest at the parish cemetery. He is remembered as a fearless servant of faith, a bridge-builder in the community, and a moral compass during Uganda’s most challenging moments.
