President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has paid tribute to the late Rev. Fr. Simon Peter Ssessanga, praising him as a courageous priest who served both the Church and the nation with unwavering dedication. Fr. Ssessanga, the former Deputy Vicar General of St. Kizito Catholic Parish in Katikamu, died at the age of 72 after an illness. He had served in priesthood for 46 years and was laid to rest on Tuesday at the parish cemetery in Katikamu, Luweero District.

In a message delivered by Brig. Gen. Jacob Asiimwe, the President recalled Fr. Ssessanga’s bravery during the turbulent years of 1982 when government soldiers of the then-UPC regime stormed Kijaguzo Parish. The priest shielded religious Sisters from harm and went further to assist the President’s mother, the late Esteri Kokundeka, by secretly transporting her to Kenya as security forces hunted her down.

Shedrack Nzeire Kaguta, the President’s younger brother, speaking on behalf of the Kaguta family, said they will forever cherish the priest’s compassion and support. He urged Ugandans to emulate Fr. Ssessanga’s humility and unity, especially during the election period, and called for an end to divisions based on politics, religion, or ethnicity, which he said hinder development.

State Minister for Higher Education, Hon. Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, described Fr. Ssessanga as a transformative leader whose work significantly improved the lives of people in Bamunanika and Mulajje, where he served as Parish Priest. He noted that the late priest worked for all people regardless of their background.

The burial ceremony drew large attendance from the clergy, including priests and Sisters led by Bishop Lawrence Mukasa of Kasana-Luweero Diocese. Bishop Mukasa praised Fr. Ssessanga as a selfless servant of the Church who leaves behind a legacy of commitment and integrity. Several political leaders, Members of Parliament, and mourners from across the region also joined the service.

Fr. Ssessanga is remembered as a devoted priest, a compassionate community leader, and a man who stood firm for peace and humanity during some of Uganda’s most difficult times.
