Kampala, Uganda — The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao, today officially opened the 4th ARIPO Regional Seminar on the Audiovisual Sector at Onomo Hotel, Kampala.

The two-day seminar, running from 10th to 11th September 2025, is organized by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) in partnership with the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) and the Global Audiovisual Alliance (GAVA), in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the AISGE Foundation.

In his address, Minister Mao underscored the critical role of the audiovisual industry in shaping Africa’s cultural identity, promoting creativity, and driving economic growth. He emphasized government’s commitment to building a strong legal and policy framework that guarantees the protection of copyrights and related rights for creators.

“Our artists deserve fair compensation for their talent and hard work. This seminar provides us with an opportunity to strengthen collective management systems and harmonize intellectual property protection across Africa,” Mao said.

The gathering has brought together Collective Management Organizations (CMOs) from ARIPO Member States, policymakers, creators, and other key stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for enhancing copyright management, particularly in the digital era where piracy and content misuse pose major threats.

According to URSB, the discussions are expected to shape future actions aimed at improving regulation, ensuring sustainability of the audiovisual sector, and boosting Africa’s competitiveness in the global creative economy.

The Kampala seminar builds on successful editions previously held in other ARIPO Member States and is widely seen as a significant step toward harmonized approaches to intellectual property protection across the continent.
