The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development is stepping up efforts to protect Uganda's workforce through Workers' Compensation, a system providing financial and medical benefits to employees injured or killed on the job.

A recent conference in Kampala highlighted the importance of protecting workers' rights, with Onzoma Apollo, Worker's Assistant Commissioner, Industrial Lessons, stressing that employers are responsible for paying all costs related to treatment, upkeep, and disabilities resulting from work-related accidents.

"Workers have a right to treatment and support from their employers, and it's essential that they report any injuries or diseases to their employers promptly," Onzoma Apollo said.

The conference aimed to educate workers on their rights and responsibilities, and promote a culture of safety in Ugandan workplaces.

Hilda Nakagga, Head of Industrial Relations at the Ministry, emphasized the importance of Workers' Compensation, saying, "It embodies principles of equity, dignity, and justice, ensuring protection from economic and social consequences and occupational risks." The Ministry is reviewing the Workers' Compensation Act to extend protection to informal and gig economy workers and clarify employer and insurer obligations.

Labour officers are inspecting workplaces to ensure compliance and compute compensation, as part of broader efforts to strengthen social security and labour protections in Uganda. Workers are urged to prioritize their safety and well-being, and report any work-related injuries or diseases to their employers without fear. Failure to report is an offence under the law, and workers who fail to report may not receive the support they need.
