The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has directed media houses not to establish or operate tally centers during the 2026 general elections, warning that only results released by the Electoral Commission (EC) will be recognized and broadcast.

UCC Executive Director, Nyombi Thembo, issued the directive on Friday while meeting media executives in Kampala. He emphasized that any media outlet found violating the order would face the harshest penalties, including the suspension or withdrawal of broadcasting licenses.

“The Commission will not tolerate parallel tally centers. Only results officially declared by the Electoral Commission should be relayed to the public,” Nyombi Thembo stated.

The directive comes as part of UCC’s efforts to ensure accuracy, curb misinformation, and maintain order in the dissemination of electoral results.

As Uganda heads toward the 2026 polls, the move has already sparked debate among stakeholders, with concerns over press freedom weighed against the need for credible and verified election reporting.
