Why Did President Museveni Host Gen. Dagalo? — By David Serumaga

 On Friday, 20th February 2026, the President of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, hosted General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, Commander of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), at State House Entebbe. The question has since arisen: why would Uganda’s Head of State engage one of the principal actors in Sudan’s ongoing conflict? The context is a formal mandate from the African Union (AU). During its 1308th emergency session, the AU Peace and Security Council directed President Museveni to facilitate dialogue between Sudan’s warring factions — the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) — as part of renewed continental efforts to end the conflict. Since 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a war that has claimed more than 24,000 lives and displaced millions. Families have been torn apart, essential services disrupted, and humanitarian access severely limited. The urgency of mediation cannot be overstated. President Museveni’s engagement with General Dagalo is therefore situated within the principle of African-led solutions to African challenges. Mediation requires dialogue with all key parties to the conflict. Engagement does not equate to endorsement; rather, it represents a structured diplomatic effort aimed at securing an unconditional ceasefire, opening humanitarian corridors, and laying groundwork for an inclusive political process. The AU mandate expects President Museveni to encourage de-escalation and promote a national dialogue framework that prevents fragmentation and competing centres of authority. Sustainable peace in Sudan will depend on inclusivity, institutional stability, and prioritisation of the welfare of ordinary citizens affected by war. Uganda’s prior contributions to regional peace and security initiatives in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia have shaped the confidence placed in President Museveni at this critical moment. For millions of Sudanese civilians displaced by violence, the priority remains clear: silence the guns, restore stability, and create space for recovery and reconciliation. St. John Chrysostom Kakoola Primary School Celebrates 40 First Grades as Hon. Dr. JC Muyingo Advances the Legacy of Late Johnchrysostom Ssekidde

 Bamunanika, Luweero District — St. John Chrysostom Kakoola Primary School held a Thanksgiving Mass to celebrate its exceptional performance in the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), reaffirming its position among the leading government-funded schools in Luweero District. Out of 54 candidates who sat for PLE, the school proudly produced 40 First Grades, while the remaining pupils passed in Second Grade — a remarkable achievement that continues to place the institution among the district’s best performers. In recognition of this success, Hon. Uganda Breaks Ground on AFCON 2027 Training Facilities as Government Accelerates Sports Infrastructure Drive

 Uganda has taken a major step forward in its preparations to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027), with the official groundbreaking and commissioning of multiple modern training facilities across the country. The symbolic launch was held at Makerere University Sports Ground, where the State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, represented the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni. The ceremony marked the beginning of construction works that will position Uganda as a fully prepared and competitive co-host under the Pamoja Bid alongside Kenya and Tanzania. AFCON is Africa’s premier football tournament organized by CAF and brings together the continent’s top national teams every two years. The 2027 edition will be historic, as it will be jointly hosted by three East African nations for the first time. Beyond football, AFCON serves as a catalyst for infrastructure development, tourism growth, youth empowerment, and international visibility.The Government of Uganda, under the visionary leadership of H.E. Yoweri Museveni and the National Resistance Movement (NRM), continues to demonstrate unwavering commitment to transforming sports infrastructure as part of the country’s broader socio-economic development agenda. The launch of these projects underscores the NRM government’s strategic investment in youth development, talent nurturing, and national pride.At Makerere University, the new state-of-the-art complex will include a modern football training pitch, a running track, and multi-purpose courts for volleyball, netball, and basketball. This multi-sport approach reflects the progressive policy direction of the Ministry of Education and Sports, which is ensuring that AFCON preparations leave a sustainable legacy beyond 2027. In addition to Makerere University, training facilities are being constructed at Kyambogo University (Phase II), Gulu University, Lira University, Pece Stadium in Gulu, Hoima Booma Grounds, and Masindi Municipal Stadium. These facilities will complement existing national infrastructure including the Mandela National Stadium at Namboole and Akii Bua Olympic Stadium. The projects, estimated at UGX 22.8 billion, are being implemented by the UPDF Engineering Brigade under the supervision of the Ministry of Works and Transport, with completion expected within six months. This collaboration between security institutions and civilian ministries highlights government efficiency and inter-agency coordination. The Ministry of Education and Sports has once again demonstrated strong leadership in steering Uganda’s sports transformation agenda. Under the stewardship of Maama Janet Museveni, the ministry continues to prioritize structured sports development within educational institutions, reinforcing the integration of academics and athletics. Leaders present at the ceremony applauded the NRM government for its foresight and decisive action. The National Council of Sports also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with universities to ensure maintenance, sustainability, and long-term benefits. Universities were further encouraged to introduce sports scholarship programs to nurture elite talent and maximize the impact of these facilities. With construction officially underway, Uganda is steadily advancing toward delivering world-class facilities that will not only meet CAF standards but also inspire a new generation of athletes. AFCON 2027 is not just a tournament—it is a national development milestone, and Uganda stands ready to rise to the occasion.

Deputy Speaker Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa Vouches for Stronger Uganda–Antigua Ties

 Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has vouched for stronger bilateral relations between Uganda and Antigua and Barbuda, calling for closer cooperation in tourism, trade and diplomacy.  Tayebwa made the proposals when he paid a courtesy visit to Gaston Browne, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, a Caribbean island state, on the sidelines of the European Union-Caribbean Parliamentary Assembly.Uganda’s Deputy Speaker is the current President of  the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) 79 Member Country Parliamentary Assembly, and Co-President of EU-OACPS Joint Parliamentary Assembly.  Tayebwa said Africa and the Caribbean share a historical relationship shaped by similar ancestry, hence the need to deepen ties between the two regions and unlock new areas of collaboration.Highlighting tourism as a key area for partnership, Tayebwa pointed to Antigua and Barbuda’s well-developed hospitality sector as a model Uganda could learn from. “We are seeing high-end tourists coming here. We want Antigua to support us as Uganda in terms of training our people in the hospitality industry,” he said.Uganda, often referred to as the Pearl of Africa, boasts diverse attractions ranging from wildlife and national parks to rich cultural heritage. Tayebwa invited the Antiguan Prime Minister to experience this firsthand.  “I am looking to you visiting Uganda so that you can see mountain gorillas,” he said, underscoring Uganda’s unique position as one of the few countries in the world where tourists can track the endangered primates in their natural habitat.Trade also featured prominently in the discussions, particularly Uganda’s premium coffee exports. “You people take coffee here; we want to see Uganda coffee in your country,” Tayebwa said. At the end of the meeting, he presented Browne with a pack of Uganda’s coffee as a gift.In his remarks, Prime Minister Browne welcomed the outreach and expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations.“Your visit will help to strengthen bilateral relations,” he said, adding that Antigua and Barbuda values its partnership with Uganda.He also extended congratulations to president Yoweri Museveni on his re-election and praised the Ugandan people for their continued confidence in his leadership.  “I wish you to extend congratulations to President Museveni on winning another term of office. The Ugandan people have immense confidence in him,” Browne said.He proposed that cooperation between the two countries extend to the education sectors, suggesting the establishment of student exchange programmes aimed at fostering people-to-people connections and deepening mutual understanding. “We could collaborate in the education system by creating student exchange programmes,” he said.The Antiguan leader further promised to ease movement between the two countries, starting with diplomats and business leaders, to stimulate trade and investment.  OACPS ProgressAs President of the OACPS, Tayebwa said he is satisfied with the progress made during the Caribbean - EU parliamentary Assembly. The Caribbean meeting of the OACPS brings together lawmakers from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific to coordinate common positions on trade, development financing, climate change and political cooperation, making it a crucial platform for advancing shared interests with the European Union and strengthening South–South collaboration.

Notably, female students outperformed their male counterparts, demonstrating strong academic competitiveness and consistency across subjects. The Head Teacher, Mr. Paul Alibundi, attributed the success to focused academic supervision, effective teaching strategies, and the students’ dedication throughout the academic year. “Our learners have demonstrated exceptional discipline and commitment. Additionally, over 40 students scored A’s in at least seven subjects, while the majority of students attained strong results within the A and B grade ranges. The Head Teacher, Mr. Boniface Ssebukalu, congratulated the learners for their dedication and resilience throughout the academic year.
