The Uganda Professional Pilots Association and the Civil Aviation Safety and Security Oversight Agency (CASOA) are working together to harmonize flight crew and flight dispatch skills test standards across the East African region. This initiative aims to simplify the licensing process for pilots and flight dispatchers, making it easier for them to work across the region.

Captain George Mazige, Vice President of the Uganda Professional Pilots Association, explained that the current system requires Ugandan pilots trained in other East African countries to undergo fresh examinations, which can be costly and cumbersome. "If we harmonize the test standards, it will ensure that the quality of exams students are subjected to in Uganda is the same quality that the students are subjected to in Kenya or Tanzania," he said.

Paul Lukanga, Director Technical at CASOA, added that the harmonization of standards will enable the region to have better standards and safer skies. "The main objective is that the same pilot qualifications that we issue in Uganda should be applicable in all eight East African countries," he said.

The workshop is reviewing the standards for licensing and certifying pilots and flight dispatchers, with the goal of creating a regional license that will be recognized across the East African region.

This initiative is expected to improve safety, efficiency, and collaboration among partner states.

Engineer Baron Guroni, a participant in the workshop, welcomed the regional formulation framework, saying it will help improve safety, enhance efficiency, and promote collaboration among partner states.
