Kampala, Uganda – The Minister of Education and Sports (Higher), Hon. Dr. JC Muyingo, presided over the Pre-Departure Briefing and Flag-Off Ceremony for Uganda’s 67th Scholarship Awardees at the Makerere University Senate Building. The ceremony, held ahead of the 2025/2026 academic year, celebrated the departure of 76 Ugandan students set to pursue higher education abroad under various scholarship programs.

 


 

Speaking as Chief Guest, Dr. Muyingo commended the students for their achievement and urged them to serve as Uganda’s ambassadors while abroad. In his moving speech, he emphasized the importance of academic excellence, discipline, and patriotism, reminding the scholars to return and contribute to Uganda’s social and economic development.


“You carry the flag of Uganda with you. Strive for excellence, remain focused, and bring back the knowledge and skills that will transform our nation,” Dr. Muyingo said.


 

The 76 scholarship beneficiaries will pursue studies in diverse fields across several partner countries. The distribution of scholarships is as follows:


 

  • Hungary – 20 students
  • China (Mainstream Program) – 12 students
  • China (Ministry of Commerce Program) – 8 students
  • United Kingdom (Commonwealth Program) – 9 students
  • Thailand – 8 students
  • India – 18 students
  • Cuba – 1 student



 

The ceremony also highlighted the strong bilateral ties between Uganda and its development partners who continue to support the country through educational opportunities.


 

Prof. Mukadasi Buyinza, the Academic Registrar of Makerere University, officially saw off the Chief Guest after the event, thanking the Ministry of Education and Sports for its continued commitment to empowering Ugandan students through international scholarships.


 

This 67th cohort of scholarship recipients marks yet another milestone in Uganda’s ongoing efforts to build a skilled and globally competitive workforce.
