KAMPALA – The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director, Sharifa Buzeki, has led the ongoing Weyonje clean-up campaign in Kibuli’s Kakungulu Zone, Makindye Division, calling on residents and local leaders to sustain cleanliness and proper waste management to protect public health.
The exercise brought together KCCA officials, including the Director of Public Health, Dr. Sarah Zalwango, alongside local leaders and residents who participated in cleaning the area and unblocking drainage channels to improve sanitation.
Speaking to journalists during the exercise, Buzeki said the Weyonje campaign is aimed at promoting a culture of cleanliness across Kampala while educating communities on the importance of proper waste disposal.
“When we conduct these clean-up campaigns in different parts of Kampala, we are sensitising the public on the importance of maintaining cleanliness. We have cleaned various areas and worked on blocked drainage channels. We therefore urge local leaders to continue monitoring after we leave and ensure that people do not dump garbage in undesignated places,” she said.
Dr. Sarah Zalwango emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility and encouraged residents to take ownership of sanitation efforts within their communities.
She noted that many diseases linked to poor sanitation are preventable, adding that residents can protect themselves by observing proper hygiene and following KCCA’s waste management guidelines.
Dr. Zalwango also urged residents to make proper use of KCCA’s garbage collection services instead of dumping waste along roadsides, stressing that designated garbage trucks are available to support proper disposal.
Residents and local leaders welcomed the initiative, thanking KCCA for bringing the clean-up campaign to their community. However, they appealed for more frequent interventions and improved garbage collection services.
“We thank KCCA for coming to our area and helping us clean the environment. We have been struggling with garbage for a long time, and today’s exercise gives us hope that conditions will improve. However, we appeal to KCCA to increase the number of garbage trucks because waste collectors often delay, yet garbage is generated every day,” one local leader said.
The Weyonje campaign is part of KCCA’s broader efforts to improve sanitation, prevent disease outbreaks, and encourage residents to take collective responsibility for keeping Kampala clean and healthy.
