Electoral Commission Begins Updating the National Voter Register towards 2026 General Elections National

Electoral Commission Begins Updating the National Voter Register towards 2026 General Elections

The Electoral Commission has started the general update of the National Voters Register today, Monday, to prepare for the 2025-2026 General Elections. This exercise will run from January 20 to February 10, 2025, at designated update stations across Uganda’s 10,717 parishes/wards. Stations will operate daily, including weekends, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. According to Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, the update aims to allow eligible Ugandans aged 18 and above who are not yet registered voters to register. Additionally, registered voters who wish to transfer to new polling stations can apply during this period. Mucunguzi emphasized the importance of the exercise, noting that a credible National Voters Register is essential for voting, candidacy, candidate representation, or filing election petitions. He urged all eligible citizens to ensure they are registered to exercise their voting rights under Article 59 of the Constitution. After February 10, 2025, no further applications for voter registration or polling station transfers will be accepted. - Mucunguzi reiterated Registered voters do not need to re-register but should confirm the accuracy of their details in the Voters Register. The update also allows students who were registered with the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) and have turned 18 to provide their National Identification Number (NIN) to register and be assigned polling stations within their parishes. Mucunguzi outlined the key activities of the exercise: registration of new voters, verification and correction of voter details, transfer applications for voters wishing to change polling locations, and registration of eligible students who have recently reached voting age.He reminded the public that February 10, 2025, is the deadline for voter registration. Individuals who fail to register by this date will not be eligible to participate in the general elections. He encouraged all eligible citizens to take advantage of this opportunity. The exercise will also involve updating Voters’ Registers for Special Interest Groups (SIGs), including youth, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and older persons, to facilitate their council and committee elections. Mucunguzi reiterated that after February 10, 2025, no further applications for voter registration or polling station transfers will be accepted. Those who are already registered can check and confirm your voter status using https://ec.or.ug/register

X (formerly Twitter) deactivates General Muhoozi Kainerugaba's account again

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba's account on X (formerly Twitter) has been deactivated again. The account, @mkainerugaba, became inaccessible around 9 PM local time on January 17, 2025, displaying the message: "This account doesn’t exist, try searching for another." This recent deactivation follows a series of controversial posts by General Kainerugaba, including derogatory remarks about Members of Parliament and threats towards opposition figures. Earlier in the day, he referred to MPs as "clowns" and "fools," and issued threats against Dr. Kizza Besigye and Bobi Wine. In response, Parliament deferred a budget review meeting with the Ministry of Defence, demanding that General Kainerugaba appear before MPs to explain his conduct. He retorted on X, stating, "I will never appear before parliamentary clowns. Instead, I will arrest them all." It's currently unclear whether the deactivation was initiated by General Kainerugaba himself or if it was an action taken by X due to potential policy violations, such as issuing violent threats. Notably, this is not the first time he has deactivated his account; he previously quit the platform in 2022, only to return days later. General Kainerugaba had reactivated his account on January 16, 2025, just days after deactivating it on January 10, 2025, citing spiritual reasons and a desire to concentrate on the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). The situation has raised concerns among political figures and the public, given General Kainerugaba's influential position as the Chief of Defence Forces and his history of making contentious statements on social media.

President Museveni Commends Agricultural Scientists at African Union Summit National

President Museveni Commends Agricultural Scientists at African Union Summit

Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort, Kampala - President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has underscored the pivotal role of scientific research in triggering agriculture as a tool for social- economic transformation. He said it has been a deliberate strategy by Government to support agricultural research in the quest to transition from pre-capitalist, pre-socialist traditional mode to modern commercial agriculture.  Speaking at the opening of the extraordinary summit of Heads of States and Governments of the African Union, held at the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort, the President commended scientists for the strides scored in agricultural innovation. The summit was convened to review and develop a new 10-year Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Strategy and Action Plan, set to run from 2026- 2035.  “Through Scientific research, (we) ensure good quality seeds.  I salute our Scientists for developing a long list of improved seed varieties with higher yields and enhanced resilience to diseases and drought. “President Museveni noted. These innovations, he emphasized, are laying a strong foundation for agricultural modernization across the country. Over the last 30 years, the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) has developed a remarkable portfolio of over 1,000 technologies, innovations and management practices including high-yielding and drought, disease and climate-resilient crop varieties, which have positioned Uganda as a key player in agricultural innovation within the East African region and globally. Notably, NARO has played a critical role in improving productivity, especially among Uganda’s staple crops, including coffee, bananas, cassava, maize, beans, groundnuts, millet, sorghum, rice, sweet potato, cowpeas, sunflower, sesame/simsim and tea. For example, In the coffee sector, the introduction of 10 coffee wilt disease-resistant varieties since 2007 led to a resurgence in production, from a low of 2 million bags in 2005/06 to 8 million bags by 2021. In 2023/24, Uganda's coffee export earnings reached a record high of $1.14 billion, largely attributed to increased productivity and quality. Similarly, in maize production, NARO has released over 50 varieties, including 26 stress-tolerant hybrids between 2010 and 2020, contributing to a steady increase in annual maize production to over 4 million metric tons In response to Banana Bacterial Wilt (BBW), NARO released banana varieties such as the FHIA series, which are resistant to the disease and provide better yields. In the case of cassava, NARO released 19 disease-resistant varieties and are in cultivation, including NASE 3, NASE 14, and NARO-CASS 1, which are resistant to Cassava Mosaic Disease and Cassava Brown Streak Disease. These improved varieties have significantly contributed to stabilizing cassava production and ensuring food security for millions of Ugandans.President Museveni gives a thumbs up during the Summit at MunyonyoIn rice production, NARO's efforts to promote 20 high-yielding rice varieties, such as NARORICE 1-4, have helped increase rice productivity from a national average of 1.2 tons/ha to 2.2 tons/ha for upland rice and 2.5 tons/ha for lowland rice, moving the country closer to self-sufficiency at 70%. The introduction of biofortified sweet potato varieties like NASPOT 1-10 and NARO SPOT 6 and 7 has significantly improved nutrition among vulnerable communities. In cassava, NARO's release of 19 varieties since 1994 has helped farmers tackle challenges posed by diseases like cassava mosaic and brown streak, ensuring stable production and enhancing food security across the country. Among other key crops, NARO has released 32 bean varieties, including drought-tolerant types like NAROBEAN 6 and 7, and varieties enriched with iron and zinc, such as the NABE and NAROBEAN series, which have helped address nutrition and income needs. In the sorghum sector, improved varieties like Epuripur and SESO 1 have been crucial for food security and income, particularly in semi-arid areas, and these are also used in brewing popular beers like Eagle Lager. Groundnut production has also benefited from the release of 29 varieties since 1930s, including drought-tolerant Serenut and Naronut series, enhancing farmers' resilience to climate challenges. In sunflower cultivation, NARO has introduced three varieties, including hybrids SESUN 1H and SESUN 2H, which have improved yields and oil content. In the livestock sector, NARO has introduced improved goat and cattle breeds, such as the crossbreeds of the indigenous Ankole cattle with Friesian cattle, which combine disease resistance with high milk yields. In a ground-breaking innovation, NARO has developed an anti-tick vaccine with field-based trials determining the safety, efficacy, and effectiveness at 93.2%. NARO’s contribution aligns with the President's vision of leveraging science to drive agricultural transformation. Uganda’s agricultural sector, which employs the majority of the population, has shown significant progress with the adoption of these improved varieties.  The summit, attended by African leaders and key stakeholders, highlighted the importance of science, technology, and innovation in achieving food security and economic growth across the continent. President Museveni also emphasized collaboration among member states to enhance agricultural research, improve seed systems, and scale up climate-smart farming practices.

Muhoozi Rejects Parliament Summons, Vows to Arrest MPs Instead

In the past, senior army officers such as Generals David Sejusa and Henry Tumukunde, both heroes of the bush war that brought Muhoozi's father President Museveni to power in 1986, have been court martialled for their utterances in the media or "using the wrong fora". The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has rejected summons to appear before a parliamentary committee and instead vowed to arrest the legislators, whom he referred to in derogatory terms."I will never appear before parliamentary clowns," the 'Tweeting General' fired back on X. " Instead, I will arrest them all." He said his first action after arresting all the "fools in Parliament" will be to invite them for a discussion."If anyone even coughs in a wrong way I will arrest him or her on the spot," he said. "Number 2, I need another Shs1 trillion for UPDF immediately! And everybody in Parliament will support me in getting that money." Muhoozi, who is also the First Son, used all-caps for emphasis on words never appear, clowns and arrest. The Defence Committee and Internal Affairs had sought to question the CDF regarding a series of controversial social media posts that have drawn widespread criticism both within Uganda and abroad. This defiant response comes amid increasing concerns over his inflammatory posts on X, which have included threats against opposition figures, such as “beheading” Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), a leading opposition figure, and calling for the execution of former presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye, accusing him of being a “traitor” and a “clown.” In the past, senior army officers such as Generals David Sejusa and Henry Tumukunde, both heroes of the bush war that brought Muhoozi's father President Museveni to power in 1986, have been court martialled for their utterances in the media or "using the wrong fora". The committee had issued the summons, hoping to question Gen Muhoozi about his behaviour social media, which they believe undermines the integrity of the defense forces. Shadow Cabinet Minister Derrick Nyeko expressed concern about the damage these actions have caused to Uganda’s image, highlighting that the general’s rhetoric of violence further inflames an already tense political atmosphere. “How can we allow such reckless statements from a man who holds the highest military office in Uganda?” Nyeko questioned during a heated debate in the committee.General Muhoozi KainerugabaLawmakers have raised concerns that Gen. Muhoozi’s rhetoric could endanger the country’s stability and compromise the neutrality of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). According to the UPDF Act, the army is mandated to remain non-partisan, professional, and subordinated to civilian authority. The controversy led to a temporary suspension of the committee’s session as members debated how Gen Muhoozi’s online behaviour fits with the image of the UPDF as a disciplined and professional military force. His refusal to respond to the summons has sparked further debate about the role of the military in Ugandan politics and the balance of power between the armed forces and the government. This latest incident follows a series of inflammatory posts by Gen Muhoozi, in which he has expressed support for harsh measures against political opponents. His online activity has raised concerns about his growing influence in Ugandan politics, particularly given his position as the son of President Yoweri Museveni. As tensions escalate between the military and parliament, it remains unclear how the government will address Gen Muhoozi’s defiance.Critics argue that the military’s political engagement undermines Uganda’s democratic institutions, while supporters believe the general’s actions are aimed at preserving national security. This ongoing standoff has drawn attention to the role of the UPDF, which, as outlined in the Constitution, is expected to serve as a nonpartisan, professional, and disciplined force that is subordinate to civilian authority. The UPDF’s stated mission is to protect Uganda and the larger African continent, providing a safe and secure environment for the prosperity of all Ugandan citizens.

Defense minister thrown out, ordered to produce Gen Muhoozi over erratic tweets National

Defense minister thrown out, ordered to produce Gen Muhoozi over erratic tweets

Parliament’s committee on Defense has thrown out the Minister for Defense, Mr Jacob Oboth-Oboth and consequently ordered him to produce President Museveni’s son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba who serves as the Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), for questioning over his erratic posts on X (formerly Twitter) that have reportedly put  Uganda's image in disrepute both locally and internationally.  Mr Oboth-Oboth who was flanked by a delegation of top Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) led by the Deputy CDF, Lt Gen Samuel Okiding appeared to answer questions about the 2024/25 Budget Framework Paper of the Ministry of Defense. However, a section of legislators, including Mr Joel Ssebikali and Godfrey Wakooli endorsed a suggestion advanced by Mr Derrick Nyeko conditioning that Gen Muhoozi, 50, appear before the committee. The legislators indicated that the appearance of Gen Muhoozi was mandatory so that he could personally answer to a string of controversial posts he has been making on his personal account.“There are questions that the CDF has to personally reply to us, we are seeing tweets allover, attacking our neighbors, demanding foreign ambassadors to apologise to Uganda, we are seeing threats to behead NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi. Just yesterday, we slept with a tweet that Dr Kizza Besigye will be hanged on Heroes’ Day and we do believe the Deputies won’t be able to handle such. Minister, where is the CDF?” said Mr Nyeko,  a member of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) led by Mr Kyagulanyi who challenged Gen Muhozi’s father, Gen (rtd) Yoweri Museveni in the 2021 general election which was reported to be one of the most violent election ever witnessed in Uganda since independence. Gen. MuhooziOpposition leaders accused Gen Muhoozi and other top UPDF officers of ordering the abduction of their supporters and meting out violence during the polls which saw Mr Museveni who has been in power since 1986 being declared winner as he sought to extend his four-decade rule.Mr Nyeko’s suggestion was seconded by the Butiru County MP, Mr Wakooli who said “We sacrifice time and burn candles for our committee so that they get what they want. How does the deputy CDF get to know and the CDF does not. He should have informed his boss. So we shall not just be taken for a ride. They should know that this committee is here to help them.”Before the Defense Minister Mr Oboth-Oboth could respond, the chairperson of the committee, Mr Wilson Kajwengye attempted to persuade his colleagues to allow the proceedings to go on so, saying the CDF would be allowed to appear when the same Ministry returns to present the UPDF Amendment Bill, but in vain.“Next week, the Ministry of UPDF will be here presenting to us the UPDF Amendment Bill that is the exact time such matters will be handled, especially how UPDF should be communicating. Iit is part of the Bill and the MPs want to know about your establishment. We will task you that when we invite you for the formal presentation of the Bill before the Committee, the CDF turns up,” Mr Kajwengye said.He added “Otherwise now, concerning his private communication, it is better that we ask him privately. Otherwise, now, the people we are flogging are not the ones. Even if we task the official communicator of the UPDF, he will tell you, that isn’t official.”In an immediate response, Minister Oboth-Oboth said “I think you aren’t asking too much, that is normal, it is okay unfortunately today, we haven’t been able to come with him. Even this Committee can arrange a meeting, specifically for the CDF to answer those questions.”He added “About his tweets, as a Ministry, we don’t manage his handle, it isn’t an official matter. It is really personal as you said and I will be glad that when he appears, he answers those personal questions. And I would like to think that I haven’t fully answered, but I have attempted.”When asked if he had alerted Gen Muhoozi about the committee sitting, the deputy CDF, Lt Gen Okiding said: “Yes I had an engagement with the CDF and he had a programme with Djibouti. He had informed me that he will be travelling but specific days weren’t given. On the issue of his tweets, that I can’t answer.”Consequently, Mr Kajwengye gave in to the pressure mounted on him by colleagues and adjourned the sitting to Monday next week. “While you laid apology for your colleague Huda Oleru, Minister of State for Veteran Affairs, MPs requested for the whereabouts of the CDF because the CDF himself should be part of this delegation when that question was put. Unfortunately, the answer was, he didn’t send apologies,” Mr Kajwengye said.He added: “And so, it is the view of the Committee that we send you back to the Ministry Headquarters, you appear before this Committee on Monday at 9am. We expect that you will be fully constituted with the Chief of Defence Forces.” The First Son's tweets have previously sparked awkward diplomatic rows, as well as reopening old scars with neighbours such as Kenya and Rwanda. For instance, in 2022, General Muhoozi apologised to President William Ruto after his tweets kicked off a massive diplomatic storm between the two countries. In the posts, Uganda's heir apparent said he would only need two weeks with his army to capture Nairobi. President Museveni's administration distanced itself from his tweets, saying the country is committed to peaceful coexistence with Kenya.  In a separate incident, he went on X to tell America’s ambassador William Popp to apologise to President Museveni or depart the East African nation, escalating diplomatic tensions between the countries. Gen Muhoozi cited “disrespecting our beloved and celebrated president and undermining the constitution of Uganda” as the reason behind the move.“If this current US ambassador does not apologize to mzee (Museveni) personally by Monday morning (9:00am) for his undiplomatic behavior in our country, we will demand he leaves Uganda,” he said on Friday, October 4 this year.  In a barrage of posts, the first son appeared to suggest that the US has recently been aiming against Museveni's 38-year ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) government, which shot to power in 1986.

Why was KASONGO song was composed - story behind this song

His real name was Kasongo wa Kanema, died 2 years ago  and buried at Lang'ata Cemetery. “Kasongo” has been trending but few know the story behind the song. "Kasongo" was done by the band Super Mazembe, a congolese band that moved to Kenya in 1974. The band members had gone to visit their friend Kasongo in Eastleigh, Nairobi. On reaching his  house, they met Kasongo’s wife and they asked her if he was at home. Kasongo’s wife welcomed them and told them that she had not seen Kasongo for days. Back then, there was no internet and it was rare to find someone who owned a phone. They decided to send him a message through music, hoping it would reach him. The Super Mazembe members started creating a song for Kasongo in his living room, telling him to come home because his wife is worried and she’s looking for him but can’t find him. They went on to record the song and, as they say, the rest is history.Celeb City. Here are the lyrics:KASONGO - ORCHESTRE SUPER MAZEMBE [Chorus] Kasongo ye yeee, mobali na ngai [Kasongo my husband] Kasongo nga nawe oo [Kasongo I am dying] Zonga libala ee [Come back to the marriage]x2 Kasongo yo yo, mobali na ngai [Kasongo my husband] Kasongo nga nawe oo [Kasongo I am dying] Zonga libala ee [Come back to the marriage] [Chorus]Nga na ndako Kasongo [While in the house, Kasongo]  Miso na nzela[Constantly staring at the street] Soki okozonga dia ee[If you will ever return] Yebisa nga ye ee [Let me know dear] [Chorus]Libala na ndako Kasongo [in this kind of marriage] Batunaka ngai [They are busy interrogating me] Tata azali wapi ee [Where is the father] Naloba nini ee [What do I say] [Chorus][instrumental] Chorus X2Kasongo yo yo, mobali na ngai[Kasongo my husband] Kasongo nga nawe oo [Kasongo I am dying] Zonga libala ee [Come back to the marriage] [chorus]Nga na ndako Kasongo [While in the house Kasongo]  Miso na nzela [Constantly staring at the street]Soki okozonga di

A question for supporters of the M7 by James Onen Fatboy Opinion

A question for supporters of the M7 by James Onen Fatboy

By: James Onen a.k.a FatboyAs a political Independent, I have a question for supporters of the M7 regime. As most people suspect, M7 is more than likely to remain in office till he departs from this world, probably through natural causes or old age, unfortunately while having left behind no credible independent institutions - or even a credible hand picked successor - that will be able to maintain order in his absence. Following his inevitable and unavoidable departure from this world, a vicious power struggle is likely to ensue among the remaining military top brass and adjacent political actors, with each faction fighting for control over Kampala and other strategic areas of the country. In particular the Albertine region is f**ked coz that's where alot of the attention will be. You know why... 🛢💵 😅 Our neighbours (and the West of course) will obviously each back their preferred warlords/candidates, funding them and arming them, and we'll have strife in this country for years as Sudan, undoing whatever gains we may have accrued over the last almost 40 years. It's gonna be really messy. That's my unfortunate prediction. But I guess many of you might also hold this view as well. I mean, it's the story of Africa. Nothing new here. If I was a praying man, I'd pray to be wrong on this. You might be wondering why I haven't mentioned where Kyagulanyi factors in this predicted saga thus far. Putting aside for a moment that I don't believe in democracy, perhaps if Kyagulanyi were allowed to be elected president while M7 is still around that might be good because, assuming he accepts a peaceful transition should Kyagulanyi win, he may be helpful in keeping the military at bay so that no over ambitious officers get any funny ideas and decide to start some shit.  With the army acclimatised to a new president, perhaps the new president may have a chance to govern until he also hands over to the next president, and that one to the next, and so forth. This move could help foster a mindset change in the minds of those who would otherwise consider violent means of seizing power. This is not an endorsement of Kyagulanyi per see but just looking at what would make most sense currently if we are to look at a best case scenario for the future. Because I see no one from the ruling side that currently has the kind of national recognition you would need to unite the country post-M7.  And please don't tell me about the current VP who no one knows or cares about 😆. And none of the party higher ups inspires much confidence either. Perhaps this is by design? I really dunno. 🤷🏿‍♂️ To an unbiased observer it is clear that thus far M7 has failed to groom a worthy successor and it now seems too late begin grooming one. Or maybe it's not. If so this should be his IMMEDIATE and TOP priority. Is the MK thing for real or not? If it is, let him get behind it now and push it, for better or worse. Either way, the future of country rests on what moves M7 makes in the next 10 or so years. Or less. I hope he's aware he's running out of time. He won't live forever. To me it's not looking good. Frankly, I'm expecting more of the same, until the day he drops, and we will all be caught by surprise when that day finally comes and the whole country implodes from the ensuing chaos 🤷🏿‍♂️ Everyone, and I mean everyone, supporters, opposers and independents alike, expects that the country will implode if M7 is suddenly gone. Maybe regime supporters can explain to us in the replies what they think M7s game plan for the future is, in his absence. Surely you will agree there is too much uncertainty for the future. We are just genuinely curious about the future. Should we sit tight and hope for the best, or should we brace ourselves for the worst? Or for those who can, maybe they should get passports and prepare to flee the country as we await the inevitable? Tell us.I am only asking what many people are secretly wondering 💁🏿‍♂️
